MSU offers incoming freshmen chance to study abroad

Freshmen on a trip to Mexico. |
MSU's unique Freshman Seminars Abroad program is designed to introduce incoming first-year students to college life and international learning. While exploring new cultures, participants get to know MSU faculty and staff members, make new friends, and are exposed to course work that helps them develop their critical thinking, writing and study skills.
The initiative was launched in summer 2003 with one program taking 35 students to Québec City. Five years later, the program capacity has increased to more than 200 students. Incoming first-year students can choose among eight programs in seven countries: Canada, Ireland (two programs), Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and South Africa.
First-year students earn academic credit while traveling with fellow students and MSU instructors. They gain international experience, develop an appreciation of the knowledge and skills required to become successful players in a global economy, and are exposed to college level academic work and expectations. Past Freshman Seminar Abroad students say the experience helped them clarify their academic and career goals, meet new people, and be more confident living and learning at MSU.
Plans are underway for a new program in South America to be added in summer 2009.
